I am really excited about some new designs that I bought for more creative albums. Here is a really fun album of a recent session with a darling six year old. She came in a super cute new outfit, but we had the most fun just letting her pull things from the dress up closet. I put some hip music on and after that, she hardly needed any direction. I just sat there and watched her play and with every click of my shutter...a new pose! She is beautiful and creative and super fun!

I am getting used to the new studio space I share, and all the lighting at my disposal and the whole concept of shooting indoors. My studio mates Willow and Jerome and I met at the studio recently to shoot a few models for free just to enjoy shooting together. It was fun! Jerome brought a co-worker and her friend and Willow brought a boudoir client. I enjoy experimenting with new lighting and posing and it was fun to work without the pressure of getting paid! So here are two besties at their best.

I have known this family for exactly one hour of my life, and I am so lucky! I came home and told my husband all about how they laughed and laughed and laughed together the entire shoot. I am the oldest of five kids, and the only girl. Translation, I have no sisters. I love watching sisters, and these three were really fun to work with. One of them has four young daughters, and they were having fun in the studio dress up closet, so the dress up clothes started tempting the adults, and next thing you know we were taking pictures of the adults wearing costume jewelry, petticoats and fedoras. I enjoyed seeing them pick out their fun looks and encourage each other to wear goofy things. What a special relationship they share because they are sisters.

YOUR LIVING SOCIAL DEAL:

I love my job, and I value all of myclients equally. Please know that all of the terms in our agreementare to give us both a solid idea of what to expect. However, Ireserve the right to lose myself in Photograher's La-la land! As aLiving Social client, you are getting a never before offered bargainon my services, but your experience will be the same, top notch,custom photography encounter offered to every MVP client. I count onestablishing a long-term business relationship with every client.

What do I get with my session?

This is for one hour weekday sessiontaking place at locations in Puyallup and Sumner frequently used byMi Vida Photography (see below). The deal includes up to fivesubjects for the family option and one for the senior portraitpurchase. The prints included in this deal are all ordered using yourvery favorite ONE image from your session.

What types of photography can this beused for?

This offer is good for personalportrait use only. This special cannot be used for event photographyor commercial photography, ie: professional headshots.

When does my deal expire?

Expires April 1, 2012. You need toschedule your session before its expiration, and all sessions must becompleted by June 30th, 2012. There is plenty of time for you to bookyour session, so don’t wait until the last minute…there may notbe any availability if everyone books before you!

THE PHOTOSHOOT:

On-Location Options: If you want the“Main Street, USA” feel to your pictures, we can meet in downtownSumner...on Main Street! I love this location where we findeverything from open brick walls to tree lined streets! If you want amore pastoral setting, there are private properties I have permissionto use off of Hwy 162. We can get a more urban feel in downtownTacoma by UWT or off Market Street.

In-Studio: I am thrilled with a newstudio space in downtown Tacoma! We can do anything there…children,families, seniors, etc. Weather won’t affect our ability to get agood shot, and we have many furniture pieces, props and fun fashionfor clients to get their desired look.

How long is my photo session?

Your appointment time covers up to 1hour. If you are late to your photoshoot, the time is passing! We canreally get a lot of images for you to choose from in one hour...butevery minute counts. If you purchased the senior deal, your clothingchanges count as your time...ask me for tips on quick changing ideas.You can always upgrade your session to a 2 hour shoot for anadditional cost of $50.

Can I add more people into my session?

This is for up to 5 subjects. You canadd on additional subjects for $10 per subject.

What scheduling options are available?

The sessions are scheduled on a firstcome first served basis, and all shoots will be held Monday-Friday.On-location session times will vary based on available light.Saturday hours were not included in the Living Social deal but may beoffered by Rebecca Pierce based on availability. If you require aSaturday appointment, you may request one for an additional fee.Expect to schedule your shoot about 4-6 weeks in advance if you wantto have more control over ideal time and date.

Will I have my images before Christmas?

Our pre-holiday season is in very highdemand. Considering limited light and colder weather, it is likelythat your session will need to be in-studio for best results. We dohave a few dates open still for on-location shoots in September andOctober, and if desired, November…but you’ll want to book thoseright away before they are gone. Ordering appointments that takeplace before Thanksgiving will be guaranteed at our studio forpick-up by December 20th.

Will I have my images beforegraduation?

If you book your session before thedeal expires, there should be time to get your pictures back barelyin time to send out your grad announcements. PLEASE book sooner for ano-stress experience!

What is your cancellation policy? Whatif I need to reschedule?

We love our clients and want thisexperience to be a good one for everyone. Please know that reasonablecancellation notice is 24 hours before a shoot. We are people andunderstand when things come up unexpectedly. However, we reserve theright to limit multiple rescheduling requests. If you neglect tocancel or show up for your session, your Living Social deal willforfeit and only the dollar amount you paid for the deal will behonored using our regular rates for a future session.

How long after my session can I orderprints?

Approximately two weeks after yoursession we will meet at my home or studio for an in-person orderingappointment. We will schedule this when you book your session. Yourorder will be placed at this appointment, and persons responsible forpayment must attend. Minors are not allowed to do their own orderingfor legal reasons. This is your only opportunity to view your sessionimages, there will be no printed proofs or online albums.

How many photos will I see from thesession?

Please trust that anything you wouldlove we will show you! We do narrow down the images to the very best15-30 depending on the kind of session you book and how many subjectsthere are to photograph.

How soon will I receive my prints onceI have placed my order?

Orders are typically ready for pick up4 weeks after your ordering appointment. Custom albums and canvasestake up to 6 weeks. We will call you as soon as everything is readyor you can pay to have the treasures shipped directly to you.

How can family and friends order?

After you place your order, the imagesyou have chosen/purchased can be made be available online uponrequest for family and friends to place orders directly with us.

When is payment for add-on items due?

Any items purchased at your orderingappointment must be paid in full before Mi Vida Photography willplace your order. How may I use my images? Mi VidaPhotography retains ownership and copyright of all images. We may usethem for promotion, contests, marketing, publishing both in print andon the web. Clients will be granted the right to personal use of theimages and files that they purchase. Aces Up and Rae Solomon...

I got to shoot the up and coming bands, "Aces Up" and "Rae Solomon." They are both local and amazing and I really believe we'll hear them on the radio soon. It was a great show, and even though the boys in Aces Up were more about having a good time after the show and not about some stiff photoshoot...we got some fun personality shots. I was able to get Rae Solomon before they played, which made for fancier images. What a fun new thing to photograph!

Once upon a time, this bride to be was my other half. We weren't married, but when I had my second baby, my husband was working a LOT. His partner figured they could replace him at home more easily than at work...enter Brittany. Brittany was at my house for three hours five days a week, and she was almost better than a husband! She did whatever I said for three hours a day! We became good friends, and five years later it was a pleasure to photograph she and her fiancee Zach. Zach...one thing I know for sure is she makes a great husband...ha, ha.

So about fifteen minutes into the shoot, it started raining...then it started dumping rain...but we stuck with it. We had to have a follow up shoot, but who doesn't love giving in to a little kissing in the rain from time to time?

At one point, Zach was wading through the water for his woman...

After photographing Max's Bee-day party, Jennifer Carver, Max's mother and birthday party planning genius got to work publicizing her party! The first exciting thing to happen was a write up on the party planning blog, Anders Ruff. That was exciting, and led to Anders Ruff using my images on their etsy site as well.

Jen had recently been approved for a "dreamers into doers" profile at Martha Stewart.com. A few hours after she uploaded her party pics, the editors of the site selected one of the images to be featured the following day. You can see a screen shot here...

I am happy with the buzz going on with my business right now! There are exciting things in the works!

Wow...am I the only person who has never seen anything like this first birthday party? My Betsey turned one in March and I felt like I went all out because she had a cake...made by me. So Jennifer Carver, little Max's mom is passionate about parties! She has opened my eyes to the HUGE industry of party planning, and she is going to work on an Alice in Wonderland party for Alice this fall. Anyway, I love this theme, I love her attention to detail and her baby is like all of her children...super beautiful.

Push up pop desserts...I never tried one, but I wish I had.

I am certain that her writing will earn her an audience on it's own, but if she didn't have that going for her, I think her engaging personality would make anyone want to snap up a copy of her book.

Kelli and Derek got married...

I don't consider myself a wedding photographer, but occasionally a job comes up that I can't turn down. This was the case with Kelli and Derek. Kelli is my cousin and she had big plans for her wedding and I wanted in. I am so glad I did! I decided to try using on-location off camera lighting for the first time, which proved essential given the lack of light on this January day.

We didn't have a lot of time to shoot at the temple, where they were married, so we planned to go over to the Everett Station for more shots and mostly because in the northwest, you have to prepare for rain...all year...but especially in January.

A little preparation sure does go a long way!!! I am happy with the way these shots turrned out!

I had fun with Kelli's colors, and bought a cute red umbrella for she and Derek to use in the event of rain, but mostly for the bride and groom to shun the rain in windrow!. It was fun to use and did protect Kelli's gorgeous hair.

This little one has eyes that earned my praise (more like gasping shock and awe) from more than 25 feet away. His eye color was NOT edited in this image! I think his mom will have a hard time saying "no" to her little man! We were up against his nap time, but he was a true doll to work with in spite of how tired he was. Thank you, Reena and Bill.

This sweet baby was a joy to photograph! I got some new backgrounds and a new chair to work with and she was willing to smile for it all. Sometimes it is hard to pose a little one who isn't quite sitting and is too big to just sleep through the photo shoot, but this little girl still gave us a lot of options. She even stood for some of these! I love the roly poly sitters. Mom props her up, pulls hands away...I shoot one with hands leaving, "click", "click", "click" with baby pretty much sitting up and then "click" she is leaning, "click" mom's hands are back to save the day. Thanks for a fun shoot today!

This little girl is the precious, miracle daughter of one of my closest friends. Diagnosed while in the womb with a serious heart condition, little Mia underwent a heart transplant four months after she was born. Her little angel heart is strong and she is beating the odds. Mia is full of joy, and offers big smiles to anyone who makes eye contact with her. I love taking her picture! Happy first birthday Mia!

Little S is almost a year old, so it was due time to get some pictures of her, since I had offered to do a shoot as a gift to her mom when she had her. We didn't plan this, but she looked so cute and I was anxious to use my new camera and flash...this is what we managed...she is SOOOOOOOO cute! I adjusted the levels on the pics, but I didn't do anything to her eyes and I didn't pop the color at all...

Free Senior Portraits for Foster Youth...

If you know me, you know that I have a soft spot for children in foster care in the United States. Through my personal volunteer work, I've learned that only 50% of foster youth in Washington State graduate from high school. Nationally, only 20% attend college and of these, only 3% will graduate. In California, one-fourth of foster youth who age out of the system will be incarcerated within two years.

All of these statistics are in spite of the fact that 70% of foster youth want to go to college and 100% of the foster youth who graduate from high school could go for free with funding available to youth with no parental income to claim on their FASFA.

Okay, I'm distracting myself on my own post. The point is, that it's a big deal for a foster youth to graduate from high school...and while they are already used to being jipped so many basics, they rarely get senior pictures.

In the grand scheme of things, senior pictures may not be all that important, but it's a little thing I have fun offering to local foster youth; it's a little lifetime keepsake of a huge accomplishment, of youth, of trendy clothes and that carefree time in life that is hard to hold on to.

Anyway, I don't like to specify which shoots are free and which are for pay, and I don't post them all, but I have to say that I thoroughly enjoy sharing my time with them both personally and professionally.

Some little ones are awaited with such anticipation, that it just seems surreal once they are finally here. Such is the case with little baby "A". It was fun to take some pictures of this little one, she is so treasured by so many!

Monitor Calibration...

I got a new laptop so that I could work away from home, and it just occurred to me that my monitor isn't calibrated. I have been working away on pictures only to realize that they are darker than they look on my laptop screen!

Essentially, if what I see on my screen when I edit my pics after a shoot isn't accurate, I am wasting my time! So I had to do some research about monitor/screen calibration.

I started with two recommendations from my sister-in-law: Greta McBeth's Eye-One or Datacolor's Spyder calibration kit.

I didn't see a lot of difference between the two options, they both had great reviews and seemed to offer the same options and results for similar pricing, but I settled on this product because they had videos online that really showed me how to use the product and gave me the confidence that it won't be very complicated to figure out.

I'll write more once I have used it and can share my experience.

To be young again...

I had so much fun with this senior! We did two shoots: one urban shoot and one costume shoot in a rural setting, and had such a great time. N is going to be a MDT major and needed no prompting when it came to posing in new ways. She got some attention from some "really old" men when we were in the city shooting.

This family separated for four months the day after we took these photos. Dad is in the Air Force and was deployed to the Iraq. I am grateful to live in a community affected by service to our country. Regardless of where anyone stands on issues of the war, there is no denying that there are many families who are sacrificing more than I can imagine to follow the orders of the leaders of this country. I am grateful to know them and to have a chance to think about what it is they give up.

Their little one was so happy and willing to pose for pictures, it was a great time taking their pics and I look forward to seeing them together again in four months!

This family has been through a lot as most know. They were separated for four months while little baby waited and recieved a heart transplant. I've been trying to put a picture wall together for them for months, but we've been waiting for the right chance to take some updated photos. I usually use natural lighting for my pictures, which is easier OUTSIDE, but we needed to do these inside, and they turned out nice. Baby M is sure a smiler!

I am pleased to announce that I have some almost famous clients. Well, one at least...the other I can't personally vouch for because I've never heard him perform. Anyway, N is getting ready to apply for a musical theater program and they both were going to audition for a show that will play in downtown Seattle, so they came to me for some head shots. I had the opportunity to shoot a friend of mine from the growing up years recently. Love Facebook for reconnecting me with so many people from my past. Kate founded a successful, darling organic clothing line (appropriately named, Kate Quinn Organics) for babies, toddlers and children. I got to meet up with she and her new little babe at her showroom in Kirkland (wishing I had taken pics of it, it is so well put together) to take some shots of Kate and her baby to use in business publicity material. We also got to catch up...it really had been ten years since I'd seen her last.

Here are some of my favorites.We took a few of her little one and a friend that stopped in to say hello. The light was gone, but we managed to get a few little shots. I imagine this little girl will be a seasoned model for her mom before too long!

I love taking pictures of babies I love! This little guy is the fourth child of one of my best friends, and I think he's darling.

When you see these pictures, you want to think that this is a first time pregnancy, and the horrid stretch marks are just around the corner, but NO! This is a third pregnancy, and the baby is due this month!
